DC scavenger hunt celebrates Black History Month in a unique way

The scavenger hunt included 20 different landmarks across the city, from Ben’s Chili Bowl to the National Museum of African American History.

WASHINGTON — In D.C. you can celebrate Black History Month in a number of unique and creative ways. On Saturday, the Columbia Heights Runners Club did just that by kicking off their first ever Black History Month Scavenger Hunt.

“This was a way to explore different elements of Black culture as a running community,” explains Kevin Scheffield, Columbia Heights Runners club member and organizer of the event.

Over 30 runners plotted their route and then raced across a six mile radius here in D.C.

“I’m excited to learn more about the history of D.C., the history of Black people who lived here and the history right around us,” says Luke Williams, a runner local in D.C.

The scavenger hunt included 20 different landmarks across the city, from Ben’s Chili Bowl to the National Museum of African American History.

“I don’t know that much about Black history. Shockingly, we’re not taught that much at school. So I’m excited to run around to the sights I haven’t been to,” says Heather Doughtery, a runner participating in the scavenger hunt.

Runners were able to sightsee and explore Black culture while getting a good workout in as the goal was to navigate the city while learning new lessons about Black history.

“I’m excited to run and participate and explore Black history in D.C., explore our city, meet new people and have fun,” says Keith Vient, a runner participating in the scavenger hunt.

While traveling across the D.C. metro area, runners were randomly assigned teams to make new connections and build community. The Columbia Heights Runners Club hopes to include more runners and make the scavenger hunt a tradition every year.
