Can you still make a right turn on red in DC?

We answer a viewers question about turning right during a red light in D.C. if there isn't a clear sign prohibiting it.

WASHINGTON — A viewer asked our #QandA team if right turns on red were still illegal in D.C if there is no sign prohibiting it in the intersection.

Right turns are still legal in D.C. as long there is no clear sign saying not to. That being said, the District Department of Transportation has installed around 100 new no-turn-on-red signs starting back in February of 2019 to help limit the turns.

You find the list of all affected intersections here or check out the map below:

The new signs were part of Mayor Muriel Bowser's initiative to end all traffic-related fatalities.

Be sure to keep an eye out for those signs -- making an illegal right turn on red could mean a $150 ticket as well as at least two demerit points on your license.
