The tiny house craze is something that is near and dear to the hearts of many millennial and future adventurers and in DC this trend is beginning to take form!
This brand new "housing complex" (if you can even call it that) is a group of less than 300 square feet tiny homes called "Minim House" and "Studio Shed." Each house is a home with working plumbing and electricity, a community gathering space, or a music studio. Also, in this age of organic living, the houses use sustainable practices like solar panels and a rain catching device to trap, store and recycle water. The tiny grouping community also has a "micro-orchard" with 15 fruit trees, a small community based garden and apiary.
These "micro-houses" though not allowed to be primary residences yet (a law will be passed in November to allow them to be habitable) are wonderful examples of not only frugality but ingenious architectural design.
Great Day Washington lifestyle correspondent Meaghan Mooney got an inside look at the model homes, how the furniture works, how to get water, electricity, and other ways to utilize a small space for profit, or for living.
So - would you do it? Could you survive in 300 square feet? (The size of a walk in closet and bathroom for most people)
