FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Every child should be able to have fun at the fair, but they don't all have the chance to go. Apple Federal Credit Union helped the Fairfax County Neighborhood & Community Services Department transport 75 children to the KidsFest on October 5, 2019. The fun-filled event included pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, and dozens of other activities.
"For many of our families in Fairfax County depending on where you live, transportation is a barrier," said Pallas Washington of Neighborhood & Community Services." NCS promotes the well-being of Fairfax families by providing a variety of recreational and educational and programs. "Just being out, enjoying the rides, the food, the activities with their peers is great for them."
Apple Federal Credit Union was happy to lend a helping hand as part of their #KindnessRocks program.
"The children are vital to the community, so we want to make sure they feel supported," said Marco Alvarez of Apple FCU. "We want them to enjoy being a kid; forget about all the other things that may be going on. We want to make sure they feel supported and cared for."
That support was a great addition to the services NCS provides every day. The department offers STEM activities, after school and mentorship programs. "All of that builds a culture where they're able to prosper," said Washington. Creating an environment where kids feel encouraged is paramount to their future success. But events like KidsFest also help them create memories to last a lifetime. "I think this is going to be one of those memorable moments and kids next year will want to come as well."
