DC's historic and infamous Hotel Harrington closing after a century

The attached dive bar Harry's Pub already shut down its business last week.

WASHINGTON — D.C.'s historic tourist hotel, Hotel Harrington, is closing its doors for good.

The official end of an era happens on Tuesday, with specific reasons still undisclosed, according to The Washington Post.

After 109 years in the District, the hotel has garnered the distinction of being longest-operating hotel in D.C.

It's been known by its employees and patrons as a place for everyone — as has its downstairs bar, Harry's Pub. It also closed its doors last week on December 3.

Complete with a prime location blocks from the White House and some of the few "affordable" rooms in D.C., it quickly became known as the place to stay for tourists on a budget.

With news of its closure circulating online, many longtime patrons have shared their memories on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Keith Dunn posted “I was in grad school when I first visited DC. We stayed at the Hotel Harrington. Four of us in the room; I slept on the floor. Great memory. So sad to see that it is going to close.”

And Kay O’D posted “Sad to see the Hotel Harrington close. In the mid 80s it was the site for a few inappropriate office parties.”

More recently – in 2020 – it gained an infamous reputation as the hub for election-denying Trump supporters coming into town to protest.

Harry’s Pub was also in the spotlight as it became a Proud Boys hangout spot.

It also gained attention simultaneously for its crowd celebrating cops on National Night Out and for violating COVID restrictions – as shown in a video that went viral in 2020.

Hotel Harrington did close down ahead of January 6, 2021, which turned into a violent and deadly insurrection at the Capitol.

The hotel sent the Post a statement, saying, “The Harrington has seen our nation experience many events – 19 different Presidents, two World Wars, the Great Depression, the civil rights and women’s movement and many more.”

It did not mention its Trump-era infamy and the Insurrection or provide details on reasons for shutting down.

Neighboring burger joint Ollie’s Trolley is also closing, citing at least in part its inability to recover from the pandemic.

Good news for fans of Harry's Pub, though. The owner told The Post that he's helping to open a new “neighborhood family restaurant” on Capitol Hill called Joey’s.

He told the Post that it’s not going to be a dive bar – or a MAGA bar.
