WASHINGTON — Gaming, music and STEM are coming together for a first-of-its-kind event on Saturday at Entertainment & Sports Arena.
Festival activities include family friendly amateur Esports tournaments and open gameplay, live music and DJ performances, STEM education activities and conversations with experts who will offer information on scholarships, educational and professional opportunities in an effort to “bridge the gap between gaming enthusiast and education.”
“MET FEST is more than just a festival; it is a platform for empowering people of color to gain access to the multi-billion-dollar gaming industry,” organizers said in a press release.
Founder Brenda Walker was inspired to create an annual event celebrating gamers because of her son.
“I am very passionate about helping to bring awareness to young people on how to obtain college scholarships and career opportunities in the gaming and Esports world," Walker said. "I created this festival to be an annual event to expose multi-cultural youth, who have incredible talent in gaming and Esports, who also may excel in the areas of STEM and Tech, to create a pathway to inform them that their skills are transferable to attain so much in this area if they are informed of what the possibilities could be and more.”
WUSA9 is sponsoring the event, which will also livestream on Twitch. Lorenzo Hall and Kaitlyn McGrath will host. Tickets are $30 for general admission.
Attendees will also be able to check out WUSA9's new mobile weather lab.
