Google apologizes for April Fools' 'mic drop' fail

Turns out, not everyone was enjoying Google's April Fools' Day prank.

Mic drop

"Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year."

That's the beginning of the apology posted on Google's Official Gmail Blog Friday morning.

Turns out, not everyone was enjoying their April Fools' Day prank. On March 31, Google announced the "Mic Drop" feature -- a way to reply to any email with a gif of a Minion dropping a mic, ending the conversation and muting any further response.

However, the proximity of the "Mic Drop" button to the actual Send button left a lot of people upset and certainly not laughing.

Google's "mic drop" option was considered a fail by many.

Some called it "childish" while others complained it was accidentally used for important and professional emails.

One user wrote, "I hit this thing by accident in a professional email sending a contract. This is ridiculous and not funny at all. Remove it please!!"

Since the backlash, Google removed the feature and issued an apology.

"Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page."
