WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Virginia native and breakout star Shaboozey is having a groundbreaking year. Friday, the country artist received a total of five nominations for the 67th annual Grammy Awards.
Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," quickly jumped to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The song earned him a Grammy nod for best country song. In addition to that, the Recording Academy nominated Shaboozey for best solo performance, song of the year, and best new artist.
The artist known for blending country and hip-hop was also nominated for best melodic rap performance for "Spaghetti," his collaboration with Beyonce and Linda Martell.
A remix of "A Bar Song" also received a nomination for best remixed recording, but that category only honors the remixer, not the original artist of the track.
Shaboozey was born Collins Obinna Chibueze. He was raised by Nigerian immigrant parents in Woodbridge, Virginia. In a recent interview with CBS News, he said that his classmates often mispronounced his name. But one nickname, "Shaboozey," stuck.
The Virginia star posted a video of his reaction to his Instagram with a lengthy caption, thanking everyone who has supported him.
"GOOD LORD!!! Today I woke up to 6 Grammy nominations!!! This moment is something I’ve dreamt about ever since I started recording music. Even with that said, nothing could’ve prepared me for the moment when I finally heard my name called today!
