1st woman assistant fire chief in DC history retiring

She did not just service the District, but is also a native -- graduating from Eastern High School in '91.

WASHINGTON — After 31 years of service, the first woman assistant fire chief in D.C. history has announced her retirement.

On Tuesday, the DC Fire and EMS congratulated Assistant Chief of EMS Queen Anunay on social media for her retirement.

Anunay was hired as a cadet in the class of 1991, working up the ranks throughout the years. She officially took on the high-ranking position to lead the EMS division in March 2022.

She did not just service the District, but is also a native -- graduating from Eastern High School in '91. When she was initiated into the role just under two years ago and celebrated at an event, she took the mic to not only take in the moment for herself, but others in the field.

"We are here today to celebrate the women that you see here today in uniform, but there are so many boss ladies within this agency who also deserved to be recognized during this event, our civilian sisters," Anunay said during the March 2022 event. "I have stood on the shoulders of many giants, men and women of all nationalities, to get to this moment."
