  Earth Day on Sunday
It will be cooler with rain and showers but you might still want to check out the Mall on Sunday for an Earth Day celebration. It is free. There will be elected officials, speakers, live music (Government Mule and more) and educational displays and even a chance to register to vote. The celebration will remind everyone the importance of global warming. We should not, however lose sight of other issues such as finding alternative and renewable energy sources and cleaning up our environment. Long before global warming threatens our very existence on this planet the increase in pollution and the quest for clean drinking water will be greater obstacles to overcome. Let’s look at the global picture, so to speak and try and accomplish more tangible goals than just trying to lower the global temperature by half a degree in the next fifty years. Let’s crack down on corporate polluters, individual polluters and use as much recycled material in products and buildings as we possible can. We should not forget about other social issues such as hunger, poverty, malaria and aids. Did you know that over one million people die each year from cold weather and over half a million perish from heat waves? Let’s clean up our environment but not forget about the tougher social issues as well. Global warming is an easier issue to get behind but is by no means our only ‘global issue’ and can and sometimes should be separated from cleaning up the environment here on the ground and finding new sources of energy. If scientists said the earth were cooling we would still want to take many of the same actions wouldn’t we ?
