FREDRICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) - The Spotsylvania and Caroline Sheriff's Offices are assisting state police at the scene of a state trooper-involved shooting that took place Thursday afternoon in Caroline County on I-95 south.
Sr. Trooper M. H. Hamer responded to a report of a pedestrian on the interstate. The pedestrian was locate at the 116 mile marker and was placed inside the patrol vehicle. After placing the pedestrian in the vehicle, a struggle ensued. As a result of the struggle, shots were fired injuring both parties.
Hamer was transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg with serious non-life threatening injuries. Hamer is assigned to Culpeper Division's Area 5 Office which encompasses the counties of Spotsylvania and Stafford.
The male suspect was flown to Mary Washington Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Richmond Field Office and its Shooting Investigation Team are investigating the incident.
As of 9 p.m. Thursday, only one lane of I-95 southbound at the 116 mile marker is open.
