WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Troubles for the embattled Sulaimon Brown continue with an overnight arrest in DC.
Sulaimon Brown was taken into custody after being pulled over in the 600 block of Florida Avenue NW Monday morning. He was arrested at approximately 2 a.m.
"I feel I was targeted," Brown told 9News Now's Bruce Johnson.
According to Gwendolyn Crump, the director of the Metropolitan Police Department 's Office Of Communications, the officers who pulled Brown over were traveling in an unmarked police car northbound in the 2300 Block of Georgia Ave NW, when they spotted a gray Mercedes sedan bearing Maryland tags traveling southbound. According to Crump, the vehicle's right front headlight wasn't working and the unmarked police car pulled directly behind the vehicle with emergency lights and siren on in the 600 block of Florida Ave NW. Three officers in full tactical uniform came up to Brown's car and asked for his driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. Crump says he turned those over.
When police ran his Maryland driver's license they found it was suspended. According to Crump, an officer asked Brown to get out of his car. Brown refused to do so, and according to Crump, immediately rolled up all of his windows, locked his doors, grabbed his cell phone and made a phone call.
Brown acknowledged to reporters on Monday that he had a Maryland permit and that he does not have a DC's driver's license. That and his alleged refusal to obey a police order to step out of a car got him arrested and booked at 3D Headquarters.
Brown told reporters he wasn't convinced that the officers at the traffic stop were really police officers. "I wasn't 100 percent convinced because of...not just because of their dress but because of their actions," he stated Monday.
Police say Brown insisted on seeing a police official. A sergeant arrived and showed his ID and badge.
According to Brown, "Well, he made reference to the fact that, you know, 'you're the guy who tried to get the mayor locked up.'"
The police report shows that officers asked Brown several times to step out of the car. When he refused he was told he was being placed under arrest for failure to obey a lawful order. Then, according to the report, Brown replied, "That's okay. You all know who I am. I'll have each and every one of your on the news by next week."
Brown was charged with failing to have a DC permit and failing to obey a police order -- both of which are misdemeanors.
Brown's vehicle was impounded. According to Crump, officers also found a 26-inch retractable ASP baton and a window placard with the words "Metropolitan Police Department POLICE Official Business" with the MPD Patch upon it.
Crump says the department is investigating why Brown had a window placard since he has "never been a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in an active or reserve/auxiliary status."
Sulaimon Brown has been at the center of an investigation into Mayor Vincent Gray's hiring practices. Brown alleges the Gray campaign paid him to verbally attack yet another candidate, then Mayor Adrian Fenty, during last year's primary race. Brown also says he was promised a high-paying city government job which he held for a short time.
