Cupid's Sting aims to teach young people the signs of domestic violence

Cupid's Sting aims to reduce domestic violence.

A new non-profit organization was born tonight in Washington, D.C. It's called Cupid's Sting and it aims to reduce domestic violence.

It's the brainchild of DC-based Criminologist, author, professor and justice fighter Dr. L.J. Samuel.

"I was teaching at Howard, we had a rape on campus, and we just started seeing this implosion of domestic violence, and it just got more gruesome."

L.J. said she knew she needed to do something. She started teaching students on campus the signs of healthy dating. Cupid's Sting was born.

Also at the launch event on Wednesday night was Andrea Grinage. She's the Maryland woman who made headlines when she was set on fire allegedly by her ex-boyfriend while seven months pregnant. She almost died. Baby Journey lived.

During her in-depth interview with WUSA9's Debra Alfarone, she shared, "I was given a second chance to maybe save somebody else. And, even if it's just one person, I feel like that's what I'm gonna do."

On Wednesday, her presence and her story may have helped to do that. This marked the first domestic violence-related event she's attended.

"I thought tonight was awesome," she said. "I had a good time, learned real information. I'm excited. I want to spread the word."

Also at the event was domestic violence survivor and advocate, Lynn Strange, of Prince George's County. She gave a moving speech about all she'd been through. She says she was moved by the speeches.

"I have sit in this chair trying not to cry because I can feel the inspiration, love and compassion from everyone in this room," she said.

Talented musician Emma G sang her powerful song, "Sold." Prizes were raffled off to raise funds for Cupid's Sting's programs.
