WASHINGTON -- The Russell Senate Office building was evacuated Saturday night after an attic fire.

D.C. Fire and EMS said they responded to the building located at 2 Constitution Avenue NE around 6:10 p.m. for the report of a fire.

Officials said when they arrived the fire had already been extinguished by sprinklers. The building was evacuated and traces of smoke remained throughout the building.

Initially, Capitol Police reported the incident as a water leak due to water from sprinkles that cascaded through the wall.

The smoke has cleared and officials say the incident is under control. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Investigators believe old motors in the attic may have caused the fire.

This is a developing story.
