Half a century has passed since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. April 4, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s untimely death at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Individuals around the nation and the world, plan to honor Dr. King’s legacy in commemoration of the tragic day.
Here are four free events to honor Dr. King’s life here in DC:
Place: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Time: 6-8pm
Join Washington, DC History and Culture for a memorial walk and tour to learn about and honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.
Place: Shepard Park
Time: 3-6:30pm
To reflect and reignite Dr. King’s mission and dream, Concerned Citizens will be holding an observance to empower attendees to act and affect change on social justice issues.
Place: Washington National Cathedral
Time: 6:15-7:00pm
Dr. King’s final sermon, titled Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution, was preached on March 31, 1968 at Washington National Cathedral. The Cathedral will play the recording in full.
Place: Howard University
Time: 5:30-7:30pm
Ben’s Chili Bowl will be honoring Dr. King with a candlelight vigil and march to Ben’s Chili Bowl. March in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, Immigrant Right, LGBTQ Right, Stop Bullying, Stop Global Warming, Stop Gun Violence, Peace Now and Women’s Rights.
